Is It Gluten Free?

Is it time to start whining? About wine being gluten free?

Verdi Spumante

Verdi Spumante

Mike has an interesting post over at Switch2GlutenFree.com that has an even more interesting comment string. The original post is dated August 8th, 2009 but still has active comments going as of today.

Why?

Because it hits the nail on the head with respect to the extreme complexity of figuring out whether foods and beverages are, or are not, gluten free. As I wrote about recently, some of the big risks for us celiac and gluten intolerance sufferers are those blanket statements like “wine is gluten free!”

Let’s take a closer look at that one. Is wine in fact gluten free? First and foremost, never rely on blanket statements about a food or beverage category. “Wine” is not gluten free. “Most” wines are gluten free. Could someone make a wine that is not gluten free? Sure. I picked up a bottle of wine looking substance in a very wine-like bottle the other day. This particular one was called Verdi Spumante. Turns out it’s a malt beverage. Ummmm. NO!

OK, so it’s not really wine in the first place, but the point is, you never really know what someone is going to put in a product so you have to check every brand and every variety – every time.

Back to the point of this post. What’s interesting about the thread at Switch2GlutenFree.com are the comments from some users about some vintners using a flour-based paste to seal wooden barrels. Hmmm. I happen to be one of those celiac’s that is extremely sensitive, so if there is a trace of anything, anywhere nearby, I’ll get sick.

I know from my personal experience that I can drink wine and be fine 80-90% of the time. Sometimes I get sick though, and I’ve never been able to pin down the source. Could it be a wine-related gluten poisoning? Maybe. Could it be one of a hundred other things? Maybe.

What say you? Is it time to whine about wine?

Truth or Consequences: Parrot Bay Coconut Rum

Is It Gluten Free?

___  Yes!
___   No!
___  I’m afraid to find out!

This one has proven to be surprisingly problematic for me. Celiac.com has quite a bit of conflicting information and my favorite Celiac / Gluten free database, Clan Thompson, has not yet added this one to their list. So I sucked it up and contacted the company. You know from my previous posts how onerous a process it can be to speak to the legal minions.
Post your answer and insights in the comments below and I’ll add my findings in a day or so!

Update:I contacted Captain Morgans (Diageo Distributors) and inquired about the Parrot Bay Coconut Rum specifically. They promptly replied with the following:

Please be advised that Diageo products which have been distilled do not contain glutens or gluten residues. However, as this relates to a medical condition, may we suggest that you consult your own physician concerning the consumption of beverage alcohol products.
Unsure as to whether this covered the Coconut Rum as it’s a low proof product and I was concerned that ingredients may be added after distillation, I asked for clarification and received the following response:
The Captain Morgan Parrot Bay Coconut Rum is a distilled product and it is gluten free. However, as this relates to a medical condition we recommend that you consult a physician before consuming the product.
So there you have it!

Hmmm. Tricky one…. Candy’s that are based on some mysterious powdery substance. They’re good, therefore you probably can’t eat them if you have celiac.

OK, here’s one that’s a great example of things to always check out. I’ll give you some hints from the ingredients label. For example, Glaceau VitaminWater defense contains a bunch of serious and scary sounding ingredients, with the most suspicious being “natural flavors.”  Hmmm. That tells you a lot now doesn’t it?

Is “Beast Sauce” gluten free?

Aunt Rissy and I are the proud parents of two high school teenagers. It’s amazing I can even remember that,  as according to them, we each lost 60 I.Q. points on the morning of their respective 13th birthdays. We expect to start gradually regaining our lost intelligence sometime during their 25th year. We’re hopeful anyway.

Being intellectually challenged parents, we have the privilege of learning many new things each day. Such as “You don’t understand, it’s different than when
you were growing up.” We’ve also learned much about how many text messages a teen can crank out each day – it’s about 2,000 – unless someone broke up with someone else and then it’s more. So far I think we’re keeping up pretty well with our new fountain of knowledge – with one notable exception:

Beast.

“Beast” sounded like a simple concept to me. Big animals, red meat, triple-decker fat burgers or some such thing. Given the simple nature of the term I was pretty confident that “beast” was some teen slang for “totally awesome food dude.” And better yet, it sounded gluten free to me.

Turns out I was a little off the mark. “Beast” is one of those multipurpose noun/verb/adjective/adverb type things that means something like “awesome.” You can be “beast” on the field or dance floor. A cool game, CD, or movie can be “beast.” You can “beast” (dominate) someone in a game or sport.

So being a quick learner, I quickly figured out that Glutino English Muffins and Bards Beer are “beast.” More importantly, Aunt Rissy is a total “beast” when it comes to gluten free cooking.

Just when I had gotten comfortable with the whole “beast” concept, my son hit me with a new concept:

Beast Sauce.

Apparently he is “the beast sauce.” All I want to know is whether or not it’s gluten free.
